Learning outside the walls – A trip to Manipal for Class X
“What we learn with pleasure, we never forget.”
Keeping this in mind, our school had organized a day’s educational and recreational trip to Manipal for the students of class X on 28th September 2024. A highly energetic group of 117 students and a fun team of 7 invigilators gathered at the school grounds at 7:15 A.M, ready for the most awaited day of the year. Rev.Fr. Johnson. L. Sequeira, our principal blessed us and gave a brief overview of the guidelines to be followed during the trip, soon after which we left for our destination on 3 private buses booked by the school. The journey to the various places were also a part of the various activities that we engaged in that made our day. During the bus ride, we played antakshari with the teachers, listened to songs, and had fun conversations.
After a delicious breakfast at the elite Manipal Inn, we reached the Hastha Shilpa Heritage Village Museum at 10:30 A.M, where the students were warmly welcomed by Ramesh Sir.
The exploration of Heritage Village was a highlight of the day. We all marveled at the beauty of traditional Indian architecture that displayed intricate craftsmanship. Among the key artifacts we encountered were various irrigation tools that highlighted ancient agricultural practices and beautiful Mysore paintings made using leaves of gold. We explored various ancient architectural structures, including ones that were 200 and 400 years old, a Brahmin’s house, the Peshwa Wada, houses from Sringeri and Kundapura, Shetty’s house, a Muslim’s house, a Christian’s house, Harihara mandir, Mudhol palace darbar, Louise house, Nandikeshava shrine, The Shettys house and various olden day shops adorned with artifacts which included lamps, the ancient study table, statues, wooden carvings, the horoscope table etc.
The diversity, uniqueness, delicacy and precision involved in making the articles, and the overwhelming history that the houses presented us with, enthralled us all.
After an engaging morning, we departed for lunch at the Manipal Inn at 12:55 PM. Due to slight inconveniences experiencing a minor accident experienced by one of our buses during our return, we arrived back at the hotel by 1:55 PM.
Lunch concluded at 2:40 PM, after which we left for Manipal Anatomy and Pathology Museum. The museum was loaded with innumerable specimens including human and animal bones, organ cross-sections and a whole load of biological knowledge which captivated the curious minds of the pupils including the structure of the heart, bones and reproductive systems. We also learnt about the different disease new born babies are prone to, the human body and a variety of other topics.
Later the students enjoyed themselves in the park and took several photos with teachers and their friends.
It was finally time to head back home. On the way back to Mangalore, we enjoyed black currant and mango cup ice creams sponsored by an ex-Lourdite, for which we are all immensely grateful for. The journey back was equally energetic despite the tiring day, when we all joyfully sang songs and danced throughout the return journey. The excursionists reached the campus at 5:30 P.M. Anusha Nayak and Ester Fernandes, on behalf of all the students, expressed their gratitude to God for not letting any harm befall on us, the Principal and acknowledged the guidance and support of the teachers.
Overall, the picnic was an enriching experience filled with cultural heritage, historical insights, and hands-on learning. Despite the minor setback, the day proved to be enjoyable and educational, with the exploration of Heritage Village standing out as a memorable highlight. This trip was not only educational but it was a beautiful day that not just filled us with countless memories that would be cherished but also would lead us to carry a newfound appreciation for our past.
